Welcome to Week 10 of The Blooms
A spring flower not to miss is the hyacinth. I forced some indoors in January and unfortunately they bloomed before growing much of a stem at all. Similarly, hyacinths grown in the garden tend to have relatively short stems which can really limit arranging opportunities.
The hyacinths I used in this weeks arrangement came from a local greenhouse farm called Onos Greenhouses Ltd. I was amazed at the length of their stems which is apparently achieved by denying them light for as long as possible. I decided to make two arrangements with the same flowers. The first with longer stems, and the second 5 days later with shorter stems and stronger smelling fuller blooms. The tulips in the first arrangement came from the same farm. The grape hyacinths in the second arrangement are from my own garden.
